Mary Helen Burgess

The Board of Directors, Leadership, staff, and patients of Total Health Care, Inc. take this time to extend our condolences as well as our love and appreciation to the family of Ms. Mary Helen Burgess.

Ms. Burgess devoted her entire life to the city of Baltimore with a particular focus on creating access to quality health care within the community. She was one of the visionary leaders to establish Total Health Care, Inc.; not one to focus her gifts in one area, Ms. Burgess’ work revolved around the intersection of health, livable housing, job development and training. Her leadership at Total Health Care spanned decades, serving in the roles of Board Director, Board Chair, and finally Board Member Emeritus from 1978 – 2018 growing the organization from a small space in a church to eight health centers throughout Baltimore City at the time of her retirement from the Board of Directors. Her servant leadership was recognized with the naming of a health center site, The Helen Burgess Health Center at Mondawmin.

Her work was birthed out of a desire and belief that the change we want to see can begin with us. When the storms of life come upon us – and all of us will experience them – we can rise above them by setting our minds and our beliefs toward God. The storms do not have to overcome us. We can allow God’s power to lift us above them. God enables us to ride the winds of the storms that bring sickness, tragedy, disappointment and death into our lives. We can soar above the storm. Take care to remember: “it is not the burdens of life that weigh us down. It is how we handle those burdens.”

Ms. Burgess devoted a life to service of work to lift those burdens from her fellow brothers and sisters. We are thankful for the time, faithfulness, spirit, love of God and her many contributions to Total Health Care.

Be assured we are praying for the entire family, all of her friends and will continue the legacy Ms. Burgess began many years ago.
